Gender Issues Working Group

Wednesday, 19 October 2016

The Gender Issues Working Group (GIWG) is a student initiative that brings together students and faculty to discuss world issues related to gender, whether they are related to men, women, transgender folk or societal heteronormativity in general. It examines how these issues intersect with other topics such as race/ethnicity, culture, religion, sexuality, economics, development, poverty, violence, labor, etc.

The group organizes discussions and promotes additional cultural and activist events in Paris. Topics of discussion have included the potential implications of criminalizing prostitution in the Netherlands, and the ethical and legal aspects of the sex selection industry in the US, and the practice of castration for the purposes of witchcraft in Uganda.

This group was created by AGS students, and its leadership is taken over every year by a new student. This type of initiatives, just like the AGS Middle East Society, reflects the opportunities offered by AGS to start initiatives allowing you to pursue your interests while gaining organizational experience.
